A rare 18th-Century English double horizontal sundial,
signed on the underside Fair par Tuttell Ingenieur pour les Instruments de Mathematique a Charing + a LONDRE, the brass horizontal plate hinged to fold in the centre, one half of the upper side with a pierced and foliate shaped and engraved gnomon, with turned brass plummet and scale at the base 30°-80°, folding over a central wind rose motif with foliate decoration and faces between each of the eight initialled compass points, the gnomon reading off an hour scale IIII-XII, I-VIII with 10-minute sub-divisions, marked around the edge of the plate, the other half of the upper side with a sliding foliate-engraved folding silver gnomon moving along a calendar scale with initials for December through June on one side and further marked 20 10 Æ 10 20, the other side with initials for June through December and sigils for the houses of the Zodiac Gemini through Capricorn, the gnomon arranged to read off an oval hour scale IIII-XII, I-VIII, with 10-minute sub-divisions, the outer edge of the plate with graduations for 65°-0-65°, 0° shown as N, further engraved along the bottom edge Tho: Tuttell Charing + Londini Fecit, the underside with three turned brass feet, one side with the inscription in French, the other with two tables, one for Perpetuall Years, the other for Almanacke Sundays, the sliding gnomon moving along a scale for the rising and setting of the sun marked on one side VIII-IIII and Rises, on the other IIII-VIII and Setts -- 6¼in.
