Apparently the only pair of batting pads associated with Sir Donald Bradman's batting career to appear at auction, traditionally presented to Richard Nutt on the 1932 tour of Canada and the USA, now offered by Nutt's family.
Provenance
The vendor's family tradition is that the pads were given by Bradman to Nutt on the 1932 tour. see our sale of Cricket Memorabilia in these rooms 27 June 1999 lot 298 for a pair of Bradman's batting gloves also presented to Nutt and sold with the pocket badge from Nutt's blazer for this tour. Richard Nathaniel Nutt,1911-1985, made his debut for New South Wales in December 1931, scoring a century. His final Shield game was in January 1933 when he opened the batting for New South Wales. When he retired from cricket , Nutt, whose father had been a Master Mariner, became a Master Stevedore. Most of his cricket collection was destroyed in a subsequent fire. Sold with the lot is a collection of 5 copies of photographs of Nutt, including 3 in cricket apparel. There is a letter of authenticity signed by Nutt's niece, the present vendor
