The Constitution was launched in Boston on 21 October 1797 and first put to sea in 1798.  Her first mission was to guard American commerce in the Caribbean against the French.  In 1844 she became the first American ship to circumnavigate the globe.  Refitted for display and opened to the public in 1905, she became a national monument.
