Designed by the Melbourne architect Guilford Bell, the single storey building has sweeping views over Brisbane Waters and the surrounding bush from the large living room. Along one wall, the huge collection of art and history reference books and novels were a reminder of Maisie's passion for the printed word. Her remarkable collection of Inuit hardstone carvings was added to after trips to Toronto to visit her sister Brenda, the wife of the Canadian writer Robertson Davies. The furniture and decorations were a mixture of modern pieces (some designed by the architect specifically for the house), paintings and drawings by Russell, Peter Purves Smith (Maisie's first husband) and other artists, and tribal artefacts from Australia, New Guinea and Africa, all mixing happily with simple and strong pieces of antique oak furniture. Some of these were brought to Australia by Russell's forebears in the 19th century (lot 309), whilst others had been acquired specifically for Bouddi Farm. A friend, Barbara Ker Wilson recalls: "The Drysdale's hospitality at the home they built on the NSW central coast was unstinting, creating fond memories of that long table at Bouddi (lot 299) where wit, repartee and often outrageous ideas circulated, with Russell and Maisie presiding at either end as the acknowledged leaders of each gathering."
