Lot Essay
The distinctive marquetry wreath surrounding the paterae to the top of this elegant urn stand relates to the work of the celebrated cabinet makers Mayhew and Ince. Similar marquetry wreaths are apparent on a bookcase attributed to Mayhew and Ince, sold anonymously Christie's London, 14 June 2001, lot 56. Further examples of this motif were displayed on a pair of commodes displaying the 'illusionistic' marquetry typical of the renowned London cabinet-makers, sold anonymously, Sotheby's New York, 19 October 1991, lot 351.
