A LARGE PAIR OF JAPANESE ARITA WARE JARS AND COVERS
Arita Ware, Imare Type, Edo period (circa 1700)
Each decorated in underglaze cobalt-blue and polychrome enamels and gilt over a clear glaze, moulded in eight sides and designed with a continuous scene of phoenix and paulownia, and pine and plum trees, the shoulder and foot painted with large lappet patterns containing geese and flowering plants and rabbits, the collar banded by a frieze of geometric patterns; with dome covers design en suite to the vase and surmounted by a finial designed as a hawk perched on rockwork
