A LARGE TRIPLE MEDALLION USHAK CARPET
West Anatolia, 17th century
The brick-red ground with overall blue palmette vine around three ogival medallions containing interlaced floral sprays and arabesques, part-medallions on each side containing similar designs, in a shaded blue border with palmettes and flowering and leafy vine between red floral meander stripes, loss at each end, worn in places, some old repairs

Lot Essay

Medallion Ushak carpets which include three complete medallions in the field are extremely unusual. One other example, of comparable date to the present carpet, was sold in these Rooms, 29 April, 1993, lot 328; and subsequently in our New York salerooms, 21 May 1997, lot 475.
