Lot Essay

Based on the fleur-de-lys design, it has been suggested that the purchase of the clock was intended to be a gift for a member of the French royal house.
For a clock of the same design, but with a rhodonite body see, Christie's Geneva, 17 November 1981, lot 115

We are most grateful to Valentin Skurlov for providing the information concerning the purchaser of the present clock.
