Lot Essay

This was originally the pendant to a Boy with a fish still life, also in the Croiset collection when exhibited in Utrecht in 1894, and subsequently sold anonymously, Sotheby's, London, 1947, as from the School of Abraham van Beyeren (see Roethlisberger, op. cit., p. 510, no. H193). The composition of the present work relates to that of Hendrick's Poulterer with a fur hat of circa 1630 in the Nationalmuseum, Stockholm (inv. no. 331).
