Lot Essay

Rochussen has been a guest at many events held by King Willem III at the royal palace Het Loo. The artist made several paintings of the activities of the 'Royal Loo Hawking Club, 1839-1855'. Although the falconries were cancelled after 1855 and the 'R.L.H.C.' was discontinued, falcon hunting remained a recurring theme in his work. The present lot is dated 1858, so it can be assumed that it does not represent an actual falconry event, but rather a general impression of hunting on the Veluwe, drawn from the artist's memory. One of the huntsmen's costume can be recognised as that of the R.L.H.C.

We wish to thank Mr S. Fuks for his help in cataloguing this lot.
