Lot Essay

According to Dr. Kenneth W. Maddox at the Newington-Cropsey Foundation, the present work is one of at least six paintings by the artist of the subject. Undated drawings for the composition are in the collections of the Newington-Cropsey Foundation and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. The Newington-Cropsey Foundation also owns an 1891 oil and an undated watercolor of the subject. Another 1890 watercolor is in the MacMurray College Collection.

This watercolor will be included in the forthcoming catalogue raisonné of the artist's work in preparation by the Newington-Cropsey Foundation, Hastings-on-Hudson, New York.
