Correspondence between Pete Townshend and David Ruffle at Track Records comprising:
- a typescript note, signed, from Pete Townshend to David Ruffle, on Holiday Inn, Columbus, Ohio headed stationery...Enclosed is piece for the newsletter. All is well!.....Lads and me send love to you and Pete and everyone. Special Love to Marsha & all the groups at TRACK, signed Pete 1p.;
- the corresponding enclosed piece for the newsletter comprising three pages of typescript on the reverse of Holiday Inn headed stationery, addressed Hello Fans and Friends!, containing news of their U.S.tour and giving an interesting insight into Townshend's views on smoking cannabis and various musical peers...Our first show was in Boston....The really interesting part about it all...is making recordings of all our live performances on this tour in stereo...When we heard the tape we were knocked out, it really does look like we will have a good enough selection of recordings at various places by the end of the tour for an album.....The next really big event was of course our weeks engagement at the Fillmore in New York. No group has ever played that long in the Fillmore...even with all our new found fans from Tommy's success and our appearance at Woodstock...we are coming in for our first taste of critism [sic]....quite a few kids have responded angrily and confusedly about my comments on pot smoking....I think it's bad for the spirit, and...I feel a lot better since I stopped a year ago....I only quote my Master and Guru here, Meher Baba, when I say that the so called "soft" drugs are not at all soft on the spiritual planes....You should try to forget the feeling of defiance or superiority over older people and THEIR use of laws to repress you, and put the whole thing into perspective by asking yourself if you would be so passionate about it if it WERE legal, the newsletter ends with Townshend's recommendation that the fans buy a copy of the Kinks Rock Opera Arthur....it approaches the Rock Opera idea from a different direction to TOMMY and to..keep your ears open for our friends the Small Faces new group, THE FACES, signing off Cheeriwhooo, JAI BABA=!!!, signed Pete Townshend, with alterations and deletions in Townshend's hand, additionally inscribed October 31st 1969, Columbus Ohio, Holiday Inn, Room 213, Pop up and say hello!, Don't bother to knock, we can't take knockers; with corresponding envelope frankmarked 2 Nov 1969 Columbus Ohio; and
- an autograph note, signed, from Pete Townshend to David Ruffle asking him to ...deal with fan club applications. They've been forwarded through several channels so do your best to reply sharpish. I have replied to a few marked 'personal' myself - but most of the kids want pictures which I aint got, signed Pete, with postscripts P.S. Please Write, P.P.S. Please please write, P.P.P.S.
