In 1780 the Hague cabinet-maker Matthijs Horrix delivered a number of lacquer inlaid commodes to the Princess Wilhelmina of Orange, for which she herself had supplied the oriental lacquer panelsf.
The construction and decoration of this cabinet are particularly characteristic of Dutch furniture of the late 18th century; especially the ribbon-tied medallions which can be found on several pieces of furniture in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam (see R. Baarsen Dutch Furniture 1600-1800, Amsterdam, 1993, cat. 61 and 63).
A closely related cabinet was sold Poulain - Le Fur, Paris, 21 June 1995, lot 380.
