Lot Essay
The bergère's antique fluted frame, patteraed arms and veil-festooned legs feature on a pair of chairs that were removed in 1929 from Weatherall House, Hampstead, where they had been illustrated around 1900 in a watercolour of the interior of the house (offered Phillips, London, 11 February 1997, lot 88). A pair of chairs of the latter pattern were sold in these Rooms, 10 April 1986, lot 34, and were possibly the same ones that sold as property of the late Sir Nigel Broackes, in these Rooms, 14 September 2000, lot 96. This bergere, in place of laurels that festoon the chairs' arms, has imbricated paterae; these also feature on a suite of Gobelins-upholstered armchairs supplied in 1771 by Messrs Lawrence Fell and William Turton for Sir Lawrence Dundas at Moor Park, Hertfordshire ( P. Macquoid and R. Edwards, The Dictionary of English Furniture, London, 1924, vol. III, p. 104, fig. 55).
