Lot Essay

Better known for his semi-cubist renditions, the present lot provides a rare insight to the diversity of But Mochtar's talents. The elongated sculptural work reveals an affinity with Alberto Giacometti (1901-1966). However, compared to the overwhelming 'sense of compression' with most works of Giacometti, the present lot exudes a light, happy sentiment of vivacity and spontaneity. A difficult quality to attain with a bronze sculpture.

A prized property in the collection of Ambassador Josias Leco. The present lot could be seen depicted in a work of Affandi as the artist painted a corner of the residence of the collector.
