Since the 1950's, the female form has been one of Husain's most consistent themes. "Husain's figures, whether they be horses, or female forms, or both, are expressive of energy. Even if the figures are not in motion, the curvilinear forms, their stances, their rhythmic lines, the use of paint are all employed with a sense of urgency and create a feeling of exuberance which is typical of him and his personality." (Paritosh Sen, 'The Figure in Indian Art', Lalit Kala Contemporary 17, New Delhi, 1974, p. 11.)
