Lot Essay

A number of fine three-coloured lacquer wares were produced in the Wanli period bearing cyclicate-dates. Such an example with a dragon and phoenix in the British Museum, dated 1593, is illustrated by H. Garner, Chinese Lacquer, London, 1979, on the cover and pl. D, and is probably from the same workshop.
