A FINE WHITE JADE 'DRAGON-FISH' VASE
QING DYNASTY, 18TH CENTURY

Carved in the round, modelled as a mythical two-horned dragon-headed fish with bulging eyes, its agape mouth opening to form the hollow interior receptacle, the scaly body coiled with upturned fins, resting part of its dorsal fin on swirling waves forming the base, the stone of even white tone with areas of opaque speckles

Lot Essay

This mythical fish, derived from the traditional tale of the carp swimming against the tide and jumping over the gate to be transformed into a dragon, was a popular imagery augmenting the desire for success and officialdom.
