Volumes I-V, VIII-XI, XIII-XIV only, bound in 12 (lacking vol.XII, vols.VI and VII never published), 4° (252 x 175mm). Numerous plates and maps, including photogravures after Curtis and coloured lithographs after Fuertes. Modern green half morocco (vols.I & II) or original cloth (remaining volumes), 5 volumes with original cloth dust-jackets, top edges gilt. Provenance: California State Polytechnic (stamps to front endpapers of all except volumes I and II)
A near-complete set of first editions, lacking only volume XII, recording railroad magnate Edward Harriman's expedition to Alaska: 'In 1899, as a relaxation from the responsibilities of business, Harriman organized and personally conducted a scientific expedition to Alaska, chartering a steamer for the purpose and taking with him twenty-five prominent scientists. The results... are of great scientific value' (DAB). The photogravures after Edward Curtis, the majority of which are landscapes, are found mostly in volumes I and II. (12)
