Newbery, 1781. 8° (209 x 130mm). Folding engraved frontispiece of the death of Cook, folding map, 4 plates, one folding, three of the plates by Royce, two of these after Dodd. (Light spotting and small tear to map inserted.) Contemporary speckled calf gilt, red morooc lettering-piece (rebacked, original spine laid down, modern endpapers).
First edition of this account of Cook's final voyage which was published anonymously two years before the appearance of the authorised version. It was variously attributed to John Ledyard and William Ellis until John Rickman was proved to be the author by Frederic Howay in 1921. Hill p.253; Mitchell 1607.
