Half-titles, tiles in red and black. 2 folding maps, loose in pockets at back, plates and maps, some double-page, or coloured. (Some browning and small tears to loose maps.) Original blue cloth gilt, upper covers with gilt 'medallions' blocked in semi-relief, top edges gilt (light bumping to extremities, 'medallions' rubbed with slight loss to gilding). A fine copy of the first edition of Scott's account of his National Antarctic Expedition of 1901-1904, with the addition of two rare ephemeral items. Scott's ability to describe in a lively manner the heroic achievements of the expedition catapaulted his name from relative obscurity to international renown and this work became an immediate best-seller.
