Lot Essay

Hilary Pyle (loc. cit.) comments on the present work, 'One of the artist's finest character studies, it was dated 1895 in the 1961 catalogue, but belongs with the character portraits of about ten years later. The man of the road, seen in three-quarter length, walks on his own on a stormy evening. There is a dramatic play between the whites of his eyes, the brilliant reflection of the lake behind him, and the gentler light of the snug cottage he leaves behind to his right.'
