Lot Essay

Hoogerheyden was himself a sailor, before becoming a respected Dutch marine artist of the second half of the eighteenth and first years of the nineteenth centuries. He spent most of his life in Middelburg, the provincial capital of Zeeland, and many of his works depict harbour scenes of the region around that city (P. Scheen, Lexicon Nederlandse Beeldende Kunstenaars 1750-1950, I, 1969, p. 505).
