A LARGE ROMAN GOLD EARRING
1ST-3RD CENTURY A.D.
Consisting of an oval amethyst in gold setting decorated with ribbon border with zigzag pattern, set on plain hoop from which hangs a heavy cylindrical pendant decorated with interlinked wire decoration and threaded with a pearl at the base, 2¼ in. (5.3 cm.) long; and a gold and garnet 'S' hook earring in the form of a stylized snake curved into an S-shape, its wavy tail forming the suspension hook, its eyes inlaid, at the front of the earring a soldered setting with claw containing circular garnet, two sets of incised rings on the hoop, 1 in. (2.5 cm.) long (2)
