A Chinese Imari octagonal charger
Circa 1700-1710
painted in underglaze blue, iron red and gilt with a central roundel enclosing a coat of arms below a pennant inscribed 'Corbeau', within border panels of a Buddhistic lion amongst peonies, crane amongst pine and demi cartouches of flowering jardinieres, all on a blue ground reserved with trailing flower sprays and foliage -- 17 7/8in. (45.5cms) wide, (rim chip, nibbles and hairline rim crack), fitted box.

This service may have been made for the French families of de Corbeau, of the Forez district, Corbel of Brittany, or Corbet of Normandy. The service may also have been made for a Dutch family. The border design closely follows its Japanese original, which was also copied at the Meissen Factory near Dresden.
