Lot Essay

This lot is sold with a list of the marbles supplied to the original owner by Renzo Mongiardino.

The late Renzo Mongiardino was one of the most dramatic and theatrical designers of the 20th century often drawing his inspiration from the Antique, Rennaissance and Baroque. These obelisks typify the bold style of Mongiardino, and two other pairs of similar obelisks are known, one in the Palazzo Quirinale, Rome, the other is illustrated in F. Cattaneo (Ed.), Roomscapes, The Decorative Architecture of Renzo Mongiardino, New York, 1993, p.81.
