A SEVRES FAUX LAPIS GROUND COUPE
Iron-red stencilled (manufacture Imperiale) de Sèvres mark and date cypher for 1805/1896, gilder's D., incised with an arrow head
Painted with the cameo portrait head to right, possibly of Alexander the Great, reserved on the faux-lapis lazuli ground within a gilt medallion chased with stars with a further band of anthemion and pendant flowers, the rim gilt with overscaled dentil and pendant flowers, the exterior with a band of paired scrolls and pendant blossoms
7½in. (29cm.) diam.

The present footed dish is from a service similar to the Service Iconographic but with variant gilt decoration and with the portrait heads not as realistically portrayed as cameos.
