This church was one of the 50 new ones erected under the 1711 Act and was built by John James, 1721-4. The portico was the first ever to be built for a London church. Several fashionable marriages have taken place at the church including those of Lady Hamilton, 1791, Shelley, 1814, Disraeli, 1839, George Eliot, 1880 and Asquith in 1894.
