Lot Essay

The present work depicts St Luke's Church on Norwood Road, one of the 'Waterloo Churches' completed in 1822. Pissarro has positioned himself near Waylett Place and appears to be have moved the church from its actual position for aesthetic reasons. Alfred Pissarro's lodgings are situated just out of the picture's field on the right.
