Delafield Smith on verso, Washington, 22 August 1862. 1 page, oblong folio (10 7/8 x 17 7/8 in.), bold manuscript heading "Abraham Lincoln" at top with printed title "President of the United States of America," the "i" in Lincoln's signature slightly smudged, minor stains, a few tiny holes do not affect text. Lincoln appoints James C. Curtis (1797-?) of Cochecton as a tax assessor for the 11th collection district of New York. Curtis had already served as the first judge of Sullivan County, N.Y., a state congressman and a state senator.
