GRAINGER, Percy (1882-1961). Autograph musical quotation signed ("Percy Grainger"), n.d. 1 page, oblong 12mo, with music notated on a single hand-drawn stave, in a giltwood frame. Grainger quotes two bars from The Warriors. Grainger established an international reputation as a pianist before promoting himself as a composer. The Warriors, "music to an imaginary ballet," was written between 1913 and 1916. -- HINDEMITH, Paul (1895-1963). Portrait photograph inscribed and signed ("Paul Hindemith"), n.p., March 1950. 9 x 7 1/8 in. approx., with lengthy inscription in ink below photograph. An excellent close-up of Hindemith in profile, head slightly tilted downwards. The composer--on the music faculty at Yale--refers to his stay at Harvard University in a witty inscription: "The visitor from New Haven with Yale Bulldog's temper but not quite as blue -- who enjoyed his stay in Cambridge and his Harvard activities immensely. With heartfelt gratitude." Hindemith exercised pervasive influence on an entire generation of American musicians and musicologists. -- PADEREWSKI, Ignace Jan (1860-1941). A large format portrait of the pianist in concert dress, leaning against an armchair with arms crossed. -- JOACHIM, Joseph (1831-1907). Autograph musical quotation signed ("Joseph Joachim"), Eisenach, 21 August 1896. Small oblong 12mo, 9 bars on hand-drawn stave, giltwood frame. A soaring violin theme from the virtuoso, a friend of Brahms, whose performances came to be accepted as models. Together four items. (4)
