MESSIAEN, Olivier (1908-1992). Autograph musical quotation inscribed and signed ("Olivier Messiaen"), n.p., 14 August 1949. 1 page, 8vo, in giltwood frame. Writing as a "souvenir of Tanglewood," Messiaen quotes the theme from his Second Liturgy (Trois petites liturgies de la Présence Divine, 1943-4, the second entitled "Séquence du Verbe, cantique divin"), 6 bars in 6 different time signatures, with full text underlay: "Il est parti, A Bien Aimé, c'est pour nous!" Written only seven years after Messiaen's period spent in a prisoner-of-war camp in Germany from 1940-42, where he wrote his best-known piece, Quartet for the End of Time (1941). -- VARÈSE, Edgard (1883-1965). Autograph letter signed ("Edgard Varèse"), to Dagmar Godowsky(?), New York, 8 August 1956. 1 page, 8vo, on airmail post stationery, in French, in giltwood frame. Varèse regrets that he is unable to join the others who are paying hommage to "the magnificent interpreter." He has little time due to a looming deadline, and he also wishes to take advantage of the presence in New York of a physicist (an electronic specialist) in order "to clarify certain points and if possible to resolve various different problems." A bold innovator and leading proponent of modern electronic music whose early works aroused angry protests, Varèse explored entirely new rhythms and sounds in such compositions as Intégrales (1925), for wind instruments and percussion, Ionisation (1931), for percussion and sirens, and Poème Electronique (1958). -- BLOCH, Ernest (1880-1959). Portrait photograph inscribed and signed ("Ernest Bloch"), to Jean Marc Pasche, Agate Beach U.S.A., November 1950. 4¾ x 3½ in., with inscription in French, in wood frame. A black and white image of the composer smiling and looking directly at the camera above his round spectacles. Together two items. (3)
