A FINE COPY IN AN APPARENTLY UNRECORDED BINDING BY JOHANNES RICHENBACH. Richenbach (d.1486) was Chaplain of Geislingen in Swabia, and his work is distinguished by its inventive decoration. Over forty bindings are now attributed to Richenbach, most distinctly signed with tooled inscriptions and dates. He was the first binder to use rolls and often used bright coloring of individual tools to highlight them against the white pigskin.

The present binding is unsigned it but bears Richenbach's distinctive lettering of the title at head and has several tools colored. Otto Glauning has identified 23 Richenbach bindings and succeeding scholars have identified more. Howard Nixon has added a new stamp. The tools used here classified by Glauning are: f. g. l, o, p, v, w, x, aa, cc, dd, ff, hh, oo, tt and rolls a, b and bl.
