Lot Essay

Elizabeth Anne Cosby, the second daughter of Colonel Sir Henry Augustus Montague Cosby of the Army of the East India Company, was born in Madras on 18 October 1766. She married Thomas Oakes, Senior Merchant of the United Company of Merchants, on 19 June 1786, the year the present miniature was painted. They had three sons and three daughters. She died in 1797.
