A SWISS HALF-PEARL SET AND ENAMELLED GOLD SNUFF-BOX
Geneva, circa 1800, with rubbed prestige marks, later struck with two French post-1893 import marks for gold
Octagonal oblong flattened box, the lid, sides and base engine-turned with a vertical coin pattern enamelled in translucent emerald-green framed by gold paillons and opaque white enamel bands, the lid furthermore enamelled with a riverside garden scene of a shepherd playing the oboe to his sheep, observed by a seated lady being crowned with a garland by her female friend, next to a column surmounted by a globe with gold paillon leaves close to colourfully enamelled architecture, within a half-pearl border, the translucent blue enamelled corners decorated with white tripods containing flowers in colour and gold paillons, the base furthermore framed by a band of translucent blue enamel embellished with a white egg and dart pattern, incorporated slightly everted thumbpiece
