Lot Essay

Known for his depictions of marine scenes and seascapes, Lionel Walden was born in Norwich, Connecticut but raised in Minnesota where he first became interested in art. He moved to Paris as a young man and studied under Emile Auguste Carolus-Duran, and by 1887 he was actively exhibiting and winning medals in Parisian exhibitions. Walden lived for most of his life in Paris and was also a frequent visitor to Hawaii, painting seascapes and portraits in both locales. Painted in bold and vibrant colors, Fishing Along the Coast is a picturesque example by the artist and depicts two fishermen purposely beginning their day at sea. Reflections of the shore and boat dance upon the water emphasizing the scene's beautiful morning light.
