AN ITALIC MEGARIAN WARE POTTERY CUP
Signed by Lapius, Circa Early 2nd Century B.C.
Mold-made, with a composite floral of eight pointed nymphaea petals and eight shorter acanthus petals rising from a central rosette at the base, a clipeus and two small palmettes between the nymphaea petals, three decorative borders above, including an elaborate meander filled with symbols (star, four squares, amphora, column, ax, eagle), a fruit-filled festoon and bead-and-reel, the workshop signature of Lapius (LAPI) within one of the nymphaea petals

Lot Essay

There are nine other cups known with the signature of the potter Lapius, together with several other cups attributed on the basis of style.
