AN EGYPTIAN CARTONNAGE MUMMY MASK
Late Ptolemaic to Early Roman Imperial Period,
Circa 50 B.C.-50 A.D.
Brightly painted, the deceased wearing a wig, its lappets adorned with Osiris and a falcon-headed deity, the panels below with images of Anubis reclining as a jackal, a uraeus-flanked solar disk and a scarab in raised relief on the head, together with a depiction of the vulture goddess, the back with symmetrical groupings of two goddesses with a ba-bird in between, and in the center below a partially preserved scene of Anubis supporting the deceased as Osiris, the legends in Demotic text in black ink, including text on the headband for "Petihor, the son of Hor, who died at age 29"
