Per il presente lotto il Signor Everett Fahy ha avanzato un'attribuzione al Maestro del Tondo Holden, un anonimo pittore fiorentino della cerchia di Domenico Ghirlandaio, attivo tra il 1485 e il 1505 circa, così definito a partire dal gruppo stilistico formato intorno ad un'opera nel Museo di Cleveland. Sempre il Signor Fahy ci comunica che, in base ad una fotografia del dipinto esistente presso la Frick Art Reference Library, nel 1924 l'opera era presso Robert Schiff (Pisa).
Per il Dottor Andrea De Marchi l'opera è invece attribuibile a Pietro di Francesco Orioli.


Everett Fahy has proposed an attribution of the present lot to the Master of the Holden Tondo, an anonymous Florentine painter from the circle of Domenico Ghirlandaio, circa active between 1485 and 1505, and identified on the basis of a stylistic group centered around a painting in the Cleveland museum. Mr Fahy has also informed us that a photograph of the painting in the Frick Art Reference Library gives a provenance of 1924, when the picture was in the collection of Robert Schiff, Pisa. Dr Andrea de Marchi however attributes the painting to Pietro di Francesco Orioli.

Per l'attribuzione, cf., ad esempio, il modello ed il trattamento del viso del San Girolamo penitente, Palermo, Collezione Chiaramonte Bordonaro (B. Berenson, Italian pictures of the Renaissance. Florentine School, Londra, 1963, vol. II, tav. 1127).
Bartolomeo di Giovanni iniziò a lavorare nella bottega di Domenico Ghirlandaio verso il 1475. Il suo stile rivela l'influenza del Ghirlandaio, ma anche quella del Botticelli, con il quale collaborò dal 1483.
