Lot Essay

The original Lathom House, near Ormskirk, Lancashire, was destroyed by order of parliament after the Civil War. The present picture depicts the house that was rebuilt in the 18th century as the seat of the Earl of Lathom. In the early twentieth century the Earl, a keen playwrite, produced plays at the Lathom club in the grounds of the house. Ivor Novello and Noel Coward were often numbered amongst the cast. The majority of the house was demolished in 1925.
