Lot Essay

The square tower of the Cathedral of Gloucester is just visible to the left of the composition and the distant spire to the right is that of the church of St. Nicholas. de Wint's views of Gloucester are often regarded as being amongst his most powerful landscapes. He visited the area in 1840, and probably also stopped there on his return from trips to Wales in 1824 and 1829.

We are grateful to John Ellis for his help in preparing this catalogue entry.
