Lot Essay

The watercolour is a preparatory drawing for China, India, Cape of Good Hope and Vicinity, plate 12 ('the troops crossing the Great Fish River in persuit of Kaffirs and Cattle, Cape of Good Hope'). The artist served in South Africa in the 7th Dragoon Guards during the Frontier Wars in the 1840s.
