FIRST EDITION of this "magnificent work, originally conceived by the late Sir Victor Brooke, under whose supervision the greater number of the plates and illustrations were prepared. Sir Victor died in 1891 ... leaving his great work still unfinished, and represented mainly by a series of over a hundred lithographic plates, which ... have formed the basis of the present work" (Mendelssohn I, p.292); Nissen ZBI 3784; Wood 558.
