Octagonal box, the cover, side and base panels enamelled with translucent cannon grey on a vertical coin guilloché ground, the cover centred by an oval glazed plaited brown hair panel, within a parcel-enamelled translucent green leaf border interspersed with quatrefoils, all rims similarly decorated, the eight side wall pilasters chased as reeded columns, the four upper side walls chased with similarly enamelled leaf garlands and hung from studs

Lot Essay

Pierre-François Mathis de Beaulieu was one of the best-known gold box makers of the Louis XV and Louis XVI periods. He was apprenticed to Jean George whose widow he later married. Boxes by his hand are to be found in the Wallace Collection, the Ashmolean Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Cleveland Museum of Art and in the Louvre.
