written on a folio of watermarked paper dated 1804 addressed Victory at Sea 30th June 1804 and requesting fleet supplies [caulking, pitch, rosin etc] to be dispatched urgently as well as being ready to install a lower mast to the Triumph as ..that ship will be sent to the Rock as soon as circumstances of service will admit and signed Nelson + Bronte, the verso with diagonally written reply and note of orders received, contained within folder with transcript and historical data

This letter and its draft reply graphically illustrate the needs of Nelson's fleet and the importance of Gibraltar as an active naval base. Otways reply indicated that Triumph's mast was ready, in addition to the large amounts of resin and tar and also 100 bolts of canvass and twine to keep the fleet in ready condition
