He was educated in true naval tradition at H.M.S. Conway where he spent some time at sea and trained as an engineer. It was during this time that he discovered his interest in painting and in order to devote more time to this subject he returned to shore and studied under Albert Strange at the Scarborough School of Art. From there he made regular visits to Staithes and Runswick Bay and immersed himself in the Arts. Indeed, his forthright personality made him a leading player in the many concerts that members of The Staithes Group produced. He became an official war artist during the First World War whilst serving as a Lieutenant in the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve. During the Second World War he worked for the Directorate of Camouflage, Naval Division. At the end of the war, he travelled from Madeira to the Canary Islands where he painted views of Las Palmas, Tenerife and Grand Canary. He also sailed around the Norwegian Fjords and Bergen and travelled further afield possibly even to Australia.
