Large 2° (542 x 364mm). 33 fine hand-coloured lithographic plates after Gould and Henry Constantine Richter, and one uncoloured lithographic plate by G. Scharf, printed by Hullmandel & Walton. (Plate 33 spotted and browned.) Contemporary red half morocco gilt by J. Wright, spine in seven compartments with raised bands, green morocco label in the second, the others with repeat decoration in gilt of massed small tools, gilt edges.
A FINE SUBSCRIBER'S COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION OF GOULD'S FIRST GREAT MONOGRAPH: the first concerted attempt to picture and describe the toucan family. The toucans are ideally suited to Gould's and Edward Lear's dramatic approach to ornithological illustration, and the accompanying text is remarkably thorough for the period. The uncoloured plate accompanies Richard Owen's text on the anatomy of the toucan, a family of birds limited to Mexico, Central and South America and some West Indian islands.
