Provenance: 19th-century bookseller's description in French tipped onto front free endpaper -- Beriah Botfield bought from Payne & Fosse for £12.0.0 'FINE COPY FROM THE NOAILLES COLLECTION' (P.& F. Acquisitions list p.56).
FIRST EDITION. A FINELY BOUND COPY WITH THE PLATES IN TWO STATES. Cours d'hippiatrique is distinguished not only by Lafosse's anatomical skill and knowledge of equitation (gained through both study and practice of the subject), but also by the excellence of its execution: 'Les pl[anches] dessinées par Harguiniez [sic] ... sont finement coloriées et renferment une très grande quantité de fig[ures]: Ce livre est un véritable monument élevé à l'Hippologie. The present binding can be dated to the years between 1820 (when he began to use the stamp 'THOUVENIN' with which this binding is signed) and his death in 1834. Brunet III, 765; Cohen-de Ricci col.587; Huth p.46; Mellon Books on Horses and Horsemanship 61; Mennessier de la Lance II, pp.20-21; Nissen ZBI 2360.
