This area of the Trent near Castle Donnington was a favourite place of Dawson's, visited from 1861 onwards when the family renewed their acquaintance with a cousin of Mrs Dawson's. This small panel may be an earlier version of a larger painting bearing the same title, sold at the British Institution in 1866. The exhibition was to some degree a swansong for Dawson, whose work the Institution had consistently supported, as the galleries closed in 1867.
