This picture carries echoes of Hardy's Royal Academy exhibit of 1866 (no. 433), now in the Wolverhampton Art Gallery. Entitled The Dismayed Artist it shows Hardy and his brother George arriving to paint a picturesque cottage in Cranbrook, only to find it being freshly whitewashed. In our picture the figures of the artists in the doorway have been replaced by an inquisitive child, but the mixing of the whitewash remains the focus of the picture.
